Bourton on the Water, known as “The Venice of the Cotswolds” is an extremely popular Cotswold destination

This tour has proven to be ideal for American and Japanese tourists located in Oxford to the east of the Cotswolds region.
Along the Windrush valley through Asthall, Swinbrook and Widford and arrive at Burford for morning coffee and a walk around this wonderful Cotswold village. West into the Barringtons and north into the Rissingtons to see the most extraordinary of Cotswold countryside views. 3. Bibury, Cotswold Water Park and Cirencester

4. Chipping to Chipping with a Marsh in the middle

Get a taste of Olde Cotswold England starting at Chipping Campden. Through Paxford, Draycott and Blockley before lunch at Moreton-in-Marsh. Moreton grew up in the thirteenth century as a market town with a wide main street, narrow burgage plots and back lanes. There still is a busy Tuesday market with about 200 stalls attracting many visitors. On to Evenlode, Adlestrop and Cornwell and into the magnificent Chipping Norton, the highest town in Oxfordshire and situated on the western slopes of a hillside that was once the site of a Norman castle.

Through Rodborough and past Stroud to the homeland of Laurie Lee, author of Cider with Rosie, an account of Lee’s childhood in the village of Slad. Over to Painswick for lunch and up to Upton St Leonards, Cranham and Birdlip.

Stanway House, an outstandingly beautiful example of a Jacobean manor house is situated near Winchcombe in the glorious Gloucestershire countryside. It has been described by Fodor’s guide as “as perfect and pretty a Cotswold manor house as anyone is likely to see”. It was built in 1590-1630 and is situated in the hollow beneath a long spur of the Cotswold escarpment in close proximity to the church, the great mediaeval tithe barn, the jewel like gatehouse, the water mill and the cottages of the hamlet.

The House and Grounds are now the setting for a 300ft single jet gravity fountain – the tallest fountain in Britain and the tallest gravity fountain in the world. The Stanway Watergarden, one of the finest in England, was created in the 1720s for John Tracy, probably by Charles Bridgeman. Typically Bridgemanic is the Canal, a magnificent formal sheet of water, situated unusually on a terrace 25 feet above the house, and the Cascade (the largest in Britain, partially restored), fed by water flowing under the Pyramid from the Pyramid Pond. The Tithe Barn Pond adds to the watery feel of the garden, which also includes fine specimen trees, broad terraced lawns and herbaceous borders.

At a height of nearly 800 feet, Stow-on-the-Wold is the highest town in the hills of the Cotswold with glorious surrounding hill top views.

Visitors come to enjoy the buildings and atmosphere and to shop. There are delicatessens, antique shops, galleries, art craft and book shops, and tourists can also enjoy an audio tours of this historic market town at their own pace, available in the tourist information centre.

Stow’s large market square is a gem – the focus of most activity in the town including culture festivals, beautiful country markets and the excitement of music and dance. The surrounding houses, shops and inns, in mellow Cotswold stone, represent a pleasing blend of styles, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries.

In the centre of the town, the medieval market cross is a reminder of the days when up to 20,000 sheep were herded, for sale, into this square – the cross there to remind traders to trade fairly under the eyes of God.

Cirencester is a charming town set in the English Cotswolds that was once one of the most important places in Roman Britain, second only to London, and remains an important regional attraction claiming the title “The Capital of the Cotswolds”.

The popularity of Cirencester as a tourist destination is perhaps one of the reasons why the town has so many good quality hotels and B&Bs, and its diverse range of shops means that Cirencester is a popular shopping destination too. With its mix of chain stores and local shops it really does have something for everyone, with a range of independent shops standing alongside well known high street names. Blenheim Palace is a large country house in Oxfordshire, home to the 11th Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Winston Churchill.

It was built between 1705 and 1722 in the rare English baroque style and is today one of the largest houses in the country. Inside the scale of grandeur continues with an 180ft library and 67ft high hall. The interior is lavishly decorated with guided tours available through the state rooms.

The ‘Untold Story’ tells Blenheim’s story through animated figures, video and projection technology while there is also an exhibition dedicated to Winston Churchill.

Outside visitors can enjoy the hedge maze, adventure playground and butterfly house and of course the beautiful grounds designed by Capability Brown.
