Bourton on the Water, known as “The Venice of the Cotswolds” is an extremely popular Cotswold destination

And it’s where tourists and locals all enjoy the elegant 18th century bridges that cross the River Windrush as it flows through the centre of the village.

Although Bourton-on-the-Water is a large village as villages go, there are more attractions in Bourton on the Water than you would perhaps expect to find in a destination of its size.

Bourton on the Water grasps the tourism industry with both hands and offers the model village, Birdland, Bourton Model Railway, Cotswold Perfumery, Cotswold Motoring Museum and Toy Collection, Dragonfly Maze and Salmonsbury Meadows Nature Reserve amongst its attractions.

Many of the buildings in Bourton on the Water have been built in warm yellow Cotswold stone and many of the houses and cottages are 300 years old, some dating back to Elizabethan times four hundred years ago.

Book a private chauffeur driven tour of the Cotswolds that includes Bourton

One of the most popular destinations in the Cotswold is Bourton-on-the-Water and it is no surprise that it also features on our most popular chauffeur driven tours. If you’re looking for a day in the Cotswolds and to watch the world go by as you picnic on the banks of the river, then make Bouron-on-Water part of your sightseeing tour and call us on 01993 847111 or contact us here to discuss a bespoke Cotswold tour itinerary in the comfort of a Mercedes Benz.

All our tours of the Cotswolds are besoke and arranged around your starting location. Whether you require a driver to take you to some of the many attractions that the Cotswolds has to offer, or are looking to indulge in typical quintessential Cotswold countryside, our chauffeur driven sightseeing tours can be tailor-made for you.

To give you an idea of some of the tours around the Cotswolds, here are our most popular of 2010 so far:

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

1. Burford, the Rissingtons and Blenheim Palace

This tour has proven to be ideal for American and Japanese tourists located in Oxford to the east of the Cotswolds region.
Along the Windrush valley through Asthall, Swinbrook and Widford and arrive at Burford for morning coffee and a walk around this wonderful Cotswold village. West into the Barringtons and north into the Rissingtons to see the most extraordinary of Cotswold countryside views. East towards Kingham and Charlbury and stopping at Blenheim Palace outside of Woodstock. Lunch, followed by an afternoon of walks in this stunning estate and a historical tour in the Palace.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

2. Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water

See the beautiful villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter and then on to Stow-on-the-Wold. Morning coffee at Stow and a chance to shop in this lively market town – bring warm clothes in the winter because it can be windy at this high level Cotswold town. Broadwell, Little Compton, to the stone circle at Little Rollright. South to Salford, Bledington, the Rissingtons and into Bourton-on-the-Water for lunch or a picnic on the riverbank. The afternoon at some of the man attractions in Bourton.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

3. Bibury, Cotswold Water Park and Cirencester

This tour shows two sides of the Cotswolds – the rolling lush green valleys photographed by every visitor to the area; and the playground of the Cotswolds at the world’s largest man made water park.
Aldsworth to Coln St Aldwyns – the charming, unspoilt Gloucestershire village recently ranked the 7th most desirable in the country by Country Life magazine. East to Bibury for coffee opposite the world famous Arlington Row. On to Ready Token, Barnsley and the Ampneys, eventually arriving at the Cotswold Water Park. Head north to Cirencester for lunch and a spot of shopping, and a visit to the Roman amphitheatre. Finally north to Birdlip to see the most breathtaking views of Cheltenham and Gloucester.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

4. Chipping to Chipping with a Marsh in the middle

Get a taste of Olde Cotswold England starting at Chipping Campden. Through Paxford, Draycott and Blockley before lunch at Moreton-in-Marsh. Moreton grew up in the thirteenth century as a market town with a wide main street, narrow burgage plots and back lanes.
Stanway House, an outstandingly beautiful example of a Jacobean manor house is situated near Winchcombe in the glorious Gloucestershire countryside. It has been described by Fodor’s guide as “as perfect and pretty a Cotswold manor house as anyone is likely to see”. It was built in 1590-1630 and is situated in the hollow beneath a long spur of the Cotswold escarpment in close proximity to the church, the great mediaeval tithe barn, the jewel like gatehouse, the water mill and the cottages of the hamlet.

The House and Grounds are now the setting for a 300ft single jet gravity fountain – the tallest fountain in Britain and the tallest gravity fountain in the world. The Stanway Watergarden, one of the finest in England, was created in the 1720s for John Tracy, probably by Charles Bridgeman. Typically Bridgemanic is the Canal, a magnificent formal sheet of water, situated unusually on a terrace 25 feet above the house, and the Cascade (the largest in Britain, partially restored), fed by water flowing under the Pyramid from the Pyramid Pond. The Tithe Barn Pond adds to the watery feel of the garden, which also includes fine specimen trees, broad terraced lawns and herbaceous borders.

At a height of nearly 800 feet, Stow-on-the-Wold is the highest town in the hills of the Cotswold with glorious surrounding hill top views.

Visitors come to enjoy the buildings and atmosphere and to shop. There are delicatessens, antique shops, galleries, art craft and book shops, and tourists can also enjoy an audio tours of this historic market town at their own pace, available in the tourist information centre.

Stow’s large market square is a gem – the focus of most activity in the town including culture festivals, beautiful country markets and the excitement of music and dance. The surrounding houses, shops and inns, in mellow Cotswold stone, represent a pleasing blend of styles, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries.

In the centre of the town, the medieval market cross is a reminder of the days when up to 20,000 sheep were herded, for sale, into this square – the cross there to remind traders to trade fairly under the eyes of God.

Cirencester is a charming town set in the English Cotswolds that was once one of the most important places in Roman Britain, second only to London, and remains an important regional attraction claiming the title “The Capital of the Cotswolds”.

The popularity of Cirencester as a tourist destination is perhaps one of the reasons why the town has so many good quality hotels and B&Bs, and its diverse range of shops means that Cirencester is a popular shopping destination too. With its mix of chain stores and local shops it really does have something for everyone, with a range of independent shops standing alongside well known high street names. The old Post Office redevelopment and the development of the Corn Hall have been welcome additions to the Cirencester shopping experience bringing many new shops and places to eat to the town.

Cirencester was once an important wool town and much of the wealth of the town is as a result of the wool trade. The magnificent Cirencester Parish Church in Cirencester’s Market Place is one of the most impressive “wool” churches in the country.
